Fred Thompson Wins South Carolina Republican Debate

What a debate!?  A new winner every single debate, Fred Thompson won this round.  For those of us who have been waiting for Fred to wake up, and tonight he did.  Twenty minutes into the debate, he came out and attacked Huckabee’s populist positions.  Tonight we saw the fire he was missing in the previous debates.  Fred Thompson’s second biggest line was his wanting help the terrorists to meet their 72 virgins.  His third biggest line was: ‘you know that the surge is working in Iraq, because the New York Times is not mentioning it.’ When asked about whether the US should support Musharrif when internal polls show his on people do not like him, Thompson’s line about not trusting or going by the polls was good.

Second place goes to John McCain.  He now supports George Bush’s tax cuts and wants to make them permanent, end earmarks, end our dependence on foreign oil, and the big one—use the veto pen to cut spending.  What moves McCain into second is his support and articulation for the Reagan ideals: low taxes, strong defense, and family values.  One of McCain’s big lines was about the Democrats view of the troop surge saying, it requires a suspension of disbelief to believe the troop surge is not working.  Wow, nice slam at Hillary Clinton.  The negatives: support for amnesty for illegal aliens and his belief that global warming is real.

Third place would go to Mitt Romney.  He was not as articulate as some of his previous debates, but his message would on target though soft.

Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani tie for fourth place.  I like Huckabee, a lot, but I do not believe he would make a very good president based on his views on the war on terror, illegal immigration, global warning, and taxes.  Giuliani is too liberal on social issues.

Last place as usual goes to Ron Paul.  He needs to distance himself from the kooks start acting like a Republican.

The look of the night came from John McCain.  After giving his answer on the troop surge, the questioner then called on Ron Paul.  He could not cover up the expression on his face which was priceless.

So, what does it all mean?  Not much—yet!
