Where Character Matters: Texas Governorship

All across this nation, politicians are talking about character. And yet it seems so few understand what it really means. There are some obvious examples of a lack of character: Senator Kennedy leaving the scene of an accident at Chapaquitic and Mark Foley sending IMs to a page are a couple which come to mind. But there are less obvious examples of character. Webster defines character as “one of the attributes or features that make up and distinguish an individual.” I have often heard character described as what I do when no one is watching.

The Texas governorship is said to be about character. And if it is, this set of photographs certainly describes the character of each candidate.

Rick Perrry and Kinky Friedman

In the first, Rick Perry poses with other Aggies at a TAMU football game. Note the gig’em thumbs up characteristic of Aggies.

In the second, Kinky Friedman poses with friends as they discuss their mental age (1). Of course his pose reflects his campaign slogan of ‘Kinky for Governor: Why the Hell Not’

The outcome of this election may not only be based on character, but your definition of character. If this election is based on the character of the individual, Perry wins hands down. If the race is based on who is the biggest character, Kinky wins by a landslide.

Who said politics was boring?!
