Democrats Play Politics With Terror Attacks

The United States and Great Britain have dodged a major terrorist attack on both our countries. This should show the average Joe on the street, who has a woefully short memory, why we are fighting the Global War on Terror. In the past these kinds of attacks seem to wake up the American people, but what about our politicians. As you would expect Republicans highlight the planned attacks and subsequent arrests as a reason for continuing the war on terror. The Democrats on the other hand want to show the war in Iraq and Afghanistan has distracted attention away from the real threat, al Qaeda. The only problem is that every time this administration has tried to focus on al Qaeda, the Democrats say Republicans are trying to scare Americans. You can not have it both ways. Either the Democrats are for the GWOT, or they are not. Personally, I do not they care about the war one way or the other, as long as they regain power.

There is evidence which shows how the US provided Scotland Yard with communications intelligence, thereby doing their part in foiling the Islamofascists. The Wall Street Journal has a great piece showing just how misguided the Democrats really are.

Let’s emphasize that again: The plot was foiled because a large number of people were under surveillance concerning their spending, travel and communications. Which leads us to wonder if Scotland Yard would have succeeded if the ACLU or the New York Times had first learned the details of such surveillance programs.

And almost on political cue yesterday, Members of the Congressional Democratic leadership were using the occasion to suggest that the U.S. is actually more vulnerable today despite this antiterror success. Harry Reid, who’s bidding to run the Senate as Majority Leader, saw it as one more opportunity to insist that “the Iraq war has diverted our focus and more than $300 billion in resources from the war on terrorism and has created a rallying cry for international terrorists.”

Ted Kennedy chimed in that “it is clear that our misguided policies are making America more hated in the world and making the war on terrorism harder to win.” Mr. Kennedy somehow overlooked that the foiled plan was nearly identical to the “Bojinka” plot led by Ramzi Yousef and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to blow up airliners over the Pacific Ocean in 1995. Did the Clinton Administration’s “misguided policies” invite that plot? And if the Iraq war is a diversion and provocation, just what policies would Senators Reid and Kennedy have us “focus” on?

Surveillance? Hmmm. Democrats and their media allies screamed bloody murder last year when it was leaked that the government was monitoring some communications outside the context of a law known as the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. FISA wasn’t designed for, nor does it forbid, the timely exploitation of what are often anonymous phone numbers, and the calls monitored had at least one overseas connection. But Mr. Reid labeled such surveillance “illegal” and an “NSA domestic spying program.” Other Democrats are still saying they will censure, or even impeach, Mr. Bush over the FISA program if they win control of Congress. (emphasis added by TRS)

The Democrats want their cake and be able to eat it too. They can not sit here and talk about how the how our attention is distracted away from real threats, but then want to end the surveillance program which led to the capture of these terrorists. The truth be told, what the Democrats really want is an end to the Bush administration, even at the expense of the United States in the short run. It is Bush Derangement Syndrome at its sorry best. They did not cry over the amount of national resources Bill Clinton’s spent on excursions into Somalia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, or carried out bombing strikes against Saddam Hussein. They said nothing about how the ‘love machine’ treated the first World Trade Center bombing as a criminal act. They said nothing when Bill Clinton refused a Sudan offer for Osama bin Laden. So the Democrats must be suffering from Bush Derangement Syndrome, it’s the only thing left.

We are at war, period. The US must use everything at our disposal to win this war, something the Democrats are unwilling to do. The Journal also notes that the left wants us to work more with our allies, the same allies who “permit far more intrusive surveillance and detention policies than the Bush Administration has ever contemplated.” If President Bush actually did work more with our allies in going after the terrorists, the New York Times, ACLU, and the Democratic leaders in Congress would sue, hound, and call for the President’s impeachment. We just can not trust the Democrats to pursue the GWOT.

In the end, the left and the Democrats hate George W. Bush. That is the bottom line in everything they do and say. It is BDS.

UN Resolution on Israel and Lebanon

Kofi Anan, without mentioning the United States by name, is blaming this country for the perceived weakness of the UN and for the lives lost since the war started.

Now, I can’t believe this, the UN Secretary General actually blamed Hezbollah, though not exactly mentioned by name, for indiscriminately killing military and civilian lives. He is also calling for the dissolution of the pseudo-government in south Lebanon currently led by the terrorist organization, Hezbollah and replaced by the Lebanese government. Kofi Anan asks that there be no absence of force with the pullout of the Israeli forces, for financial help for Lebanon and for the release of prisoners and the resolution of Selba farms. He also states that Lebanon has been a victim for too long.

Secretary of State Rice is placing the blame for the war on which it belongs, Hezbollah. She also calls on Iran and Syria to recognize Lebanese sovereignty, for Hezbollah to be disarmed and a phased withdrawal of IDF forces and replaced by UNIFIL and Lebanese forces. One thing Rice has stated a couple of times is that under this UN resolution, Israel as a sovereign nation has the right to defend itself if it is attacked.

Apparently Kofi Anan will work with both governments to work out the details. The Lebanese government will ratify this agreement on Saturday with the Israeli government ratifying it on Sunday. When the fighting will actually stop is still up in the air. Only time will tell if this will be a lasting peace, or if the pause in the fighting is an intermittent interlude. Personally, I do not have much hope for a permanent end to the fighting. As we have seen, a lack of war is not necessarily peace.

Update: UN Resolution 1701 has been ratified 15-0.  Since the UN seems incapible of naming Hezbollah by name, I wonder how serious how concerned they are about the safety and security of Israel.  Just wondering.
