Will Raul Give the Reins of Power Back to Fidel?

As a former high school coach I have many times seen an injured starting player lose his position permanently to his replacement.  Its not that the injured player can’t return, its that his replacement begins to shine making changing back unnecessary.  I wonder if this is also going on in Cuba as Raul replaces Fidel.

Cuba’s Communist leadership launched a campaign today emphasizing the revolutionary roots of Fidel Castro’s brother and designated successor, attempting to reassure Cubans that the regime remains stable after the leader’s hospitalization. (snip)

“We Cubans are prepared for the defense … and Raul is there firmly at the helm of the nation, of the Revolutionary Armed Forces,” the Communist Party newspaper Granma said.

If Fidel Castro takes too long to recover, brother Raul may decide he likes being the leader.  After all, there is no honor among thieves.

As a side note it seems the people of Cuba are not the only ones who are ‘upset’ over Fidel Castro’s health.  The left, who have always been a fan of the ‘revolution,’ are always ready to discuss the joys of living under the communist dictator.  As if they would know.  A simple search on Google will turn up all kinds of people who have nothing but good things to say about this dictator, ie, Steven Spielberg, Dan Rather, Janeane Garofalo, and others.  Betsy’s Page has pretty much nailed the reason why the left loves Fidel.

All that Fidel has going for him really is his opposition to the United States. Deep down that seems to be what the left likes about him - that they can use their praise of him as a stick to beat up on this country and on capitalism. You would have thought that the battle between communism and capitalism was over and the victor was clear, but it seems that there are still some pockets here in the US where it rages on.

I never realized it was that simple, but she is probably right.  The left hates America, Castro hates America, it’s a match made in heaven.
