House Protects Pledge of Allegiance

Finally the House gets around to protecting the Pledge of Allegiance from activist judges who seem to have forgotten this nation’s history. The bill passed 260-167, but insiders say passage in the Senate is uncertain.

The House, citing the nation’s religious origins, voted Wednesday to protect the Pledge of Allegiance from federal judges who might try to stop anyone from reciting it because of the phrase “under God.” (emphasis by TRS)

There are some of the more liberal members of Congress who do not like the idea of skirting off an area from the ever watchful eyes of the courts citing separation of powers. Unfortunately for them, I believe Congress has the right and the ability to shield certain laws from the courts. They have done so in the past and will continue to shield certain laws. Lawmakers from both sides have been all over this hot-button issue.

The quote of the day from the liberal of liberals, Democrat Senator Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, who states in all seriousness:

“We are making an all-out assault on the Constitution of the United States, which, thank God, will fail,” said Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. (emphasis added by TRS)

This extreme liberal of liberals, invokes the name of God while supporting taking God out of our Pledge. Sometimes I wonder what planet Pelosi is really from.

Fox News has a short history of the Pledge of Allegiance from conception to its final change in 1954. All of which shows the Pledge is an intricate part of American society. From the time kids first start school, they learn the words which instills a sense of patriotism. It also gives credit where credit is due. This country has become a force for good in the world only because of our Lord.

As John Winthrop said in 1630 in his “City Upon a Hill” speech, (I will paraphrase because of the words and length) that if this new country keeps God at its center, then He will bless us and allow us to resist a thousand of our enemies. We would become like a City Upon a Hill for all the world to see. But if we deal falsely with our God, then He will withdraw His blessings and make this new country a story and a by-word throughout the world as an example to those who turn from God.

The history of the United States is a history which recognized God and His blessings. Protecting the Pledge of Allegiance from activist judges is recognition of this history. Thank God the House of Representatives had the courage to defend the Pledge of Allegiance as it now stands.

More Illegal Protests and Mexico’s Problem

ICE official rounded up approximately 2100 illegal aliens with 75 of them coming from Illinois. So what do these same illegal ingrates do, they take to the streets demanding our law enforcement officers ignore the law and leave them alone. Where else but the US is such actions tolerated? Nowhere but here.

Thousands of people supporting more lenient treatment of illegal immigrants marched through downtown Chicago and rallied at the lakefront Wednesday, calling for a moratorium on deportations.

The marchers passed through downtown in waves, some chanting “We are Americans!” and others hoisting U.S. flags and signs with messages such as “Deportation equals broken families” and “We build your American dream.”

If these illegal aliens were Americans, they would not face deportation, would they?

An interesting side note is what Mexico has to do to accommodate these illegals deported back. I can not say I am surprized at the results. US citizens have had to endure the same kind of problems because of the influx of illegal aliens.

Up to a dozen times a day, a white bus pulls up across the border from Nogales and unloads migrants the Border Patrol in Arizona has caught trying to enter the U.S. illegally. The deportees flood the city’s shelters and strain public services as they try to raise money for another illegal crossing. Increasing numbers of them have come from southern Mexico and Central America, drawn by rumors of amnesty.

Last month, the deployment of the U.S. National Guard on the border made it even tougher to cross illegally, compounding problems for the city. The deportees engender suspicion and resentment from longtime residents.

“Our crime rate has been going up because the only thing they’ve got is the clothes on their back,” said Mayor Lorenzo de la Fuente. The cost of illegal immigration “keeps going up and up…. We can’t handle it. (snip)

Most migrants deported here arrive penniless. While staying at shelters, they depend on food provided by the city. If they’re injured, the city pays for their medical care. They clog the emergency room at the public hospital. And when they pry hubcaps off cars to trade for food, the city’s police arrest them and the city’s jail houses them.

Wow. If I had not read where this occurred, I would have been sure this had occurred in one of the towns in the US being overrun by illegals. The issue of illegal immigration is not just a US problem, it is also a Mexican problem. There is a reason why so many people are wanting to leave their home country, fix those problems, build up the economy, discourage corruption and the people will stay.

Bush Vetoes Embryonic Stem Cell Bill, Debate Rages

President Bush exercised his first veto today when he rejected a bill passed by Congress which would have used federal funds to finance research on embryonic stem cells on the grounds that “It crosses a moral boundary that our decent society needs to respect.”

The House tried immediately to override the President’s veto to no avail.  So far this story is a yawner, but what I found disturbing is what the promoters of federal funding of embryonic stem cell research are saying.

Those families who wake up every morning to face another day with a deadly disease or a disability will not forget this decision by the president to stand in the way of sound science and medical research,” said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.

This is one comment I hear all the time from those who support embryonic stem cell research.  Those who do not want funding for embryonic stem cell research are condemning people with certain diseases to a life of pain and possibly death.  There are several problems with this reasoning.

First is the fact that so far, embryonic stem cells have been an abysmal failure, unlike adult stem cells.  Adult stems cells are used effectively to fight diseases.  So far, embryonic stem cells have been difficult to tame growing at an uncontrolled rate.

Second is the fact that stem cell research will go on with or without government funds.  Second is the idea that research will stop because the government refused to fund it is a mischaracterization of what is really going on.  Most medical advances do not come about because of government research, but because of private money and private research.  If there was even the remote possibility of embryonic stem cells of curing all the diseases its supporters claim, the private pharmaceutical companies with the possibility of making hundreds of millions of dollars would be all over this.

The real possibility exists that the major research companies see any kind of money spent on embryonic stem cells as wasted money.  These same companies are spending millions on adult stem cell research with latterly thousands of patents on different treatments for different diseases.  One biotech giant Genzymme is currently doing research on adult stem cells and their scientists claim the potential of these stem cells is practically unlimited.

People who enter the stem cell debate ought to at least do their research first.  It is in the area of adult stem cells which hold the most promise and is the least controversial.  Embryonic stem cells is only a dream at this point, with no cures and tons of controversy.
