German Diplomat Denouces Israel
Foreign diplomats are known to say stupid things sometimes, but this one really takes the cake.
Israel’s bombing of Lebanon reduces the Beirut government’s ability to intervene against Hezbollah and could fuel anti-Israeli feelings, a senior German official said Monday.
Deputy Foreign Minister Gernot Erler said on SWR radio Israel was following a “difficult logic,” and that its military strikes risked fueling “hatred and the willingness of the other side to fight.”
The bombing also weakens Lebanon’s government, reducing its ability to meet Israeli demands that it move against against Hezbollah, Erler said.
Israel left Lebanon in 1982 on the condition that the country would extend their control to the southern parts of the country. For years the PLO used the border region to launch attacks upon their hated enemy. Since 1982, Hezbollah has done the same thing despite every attempt by Israel to ensure the peace including giving up land.
How long must Israel wait for Lebanese political leaders to comply? I believe enough time has passed for Lebanon to conquer their own country. According to UN Security Council Resolution 425, the UN was supposed to assist Lebanon to regain control over the areas vacated by Israel.
Decides, in the light of the request of the Government of Lebanon, to establish immediately under its authority a United Nations interim force for southern Lebanon for the purpose of confirming the withdrawal of Israeli forces, restoring international peace and security and assisting the Government of Lebanon in ensuring the return of its effective authority in the area, the force to be composed of personnel drawn from States Members of the United Nations. One of the reasons Israel has had to re-enter Lebanon was Lebanon’s failure to expand its authority over this lawless region. Then when the IDF responds, diplomats like Gernot Erler denounce Israel instead of Hezbollah or Lebanon.
The Deputy Foreign Minister really needs to watch the news more often. Both sides already hate each other. The only difference between today and a month ago, is that Israel has decided not to be Hezbollah’s punching bag any more.
What hoops does Israel have to jump through to please these people? Israel has repeatedly asked the UN to take decisive action concerning southern Lebanon to no avail. Lebanese leaders either can not or will not take action to reign in Hezbollah. The UN having many anti-Israel nations refuses to defend the besieged nation. The only course remaining is for Israel to turn loose of the reigns of the IDF. If this occurs, stand clear. The few remaining terrorists will not be any problem for the Lebanese to handle. But that will only happen if people like Fernot Erler stay out of the way. Diplomats can screw up anything.
