Demonstrations in Hong Kong
After nine years, the people of Hong Kong are not satisfied with the progress of rights they were promised under China’s one government, two system agreement. Hong Kong became a part of China under an agreement between Great Britain and China in 1997. They showed their displeasure in a demonstration that showing the people are tired of not having a say in their government even though they were promised one under the system of one government-two systems promised by China.
Pressure in Hong Kong for direct elections remains strong, newspapers said, after the annual democracy march drew a larger-than-expected turnout of at least 28,000. The fourth march marked the handover to China in 1997, under an agreement granting the territory Western-style freedoms. The marches began in 2003 after China tried to pass a national security law.
Organisers claimed that 58,000 took part on Saturday after an appeal from the democracy movement. (AP)
After not following through with their agreements, does China really wonder why Taiwan does not want the same thing. They can see how the system is not working.
