Illegal Aliens Costs Harris Co. Millions

I never realized illegal aliens could cost taxpayers so much.

Harris County taxpayers are spending nearly $100 million a year on health care for undocumented immigrants.

If these illegal aliens are costing Harris County [Houston, Texas] $100 million, think about what the rest of the big counties in the US combined are spending.  Someone is going to have to prove to me with real math how this is not a drain on our society.

House and Senate Approve Resolution For GWOT

For weeks the Democrats have been asking for an up or down vote on whether to keep our troops in Iraq, which is ironic since they don’t like up or down votes on judges, but that is a different matter.   Now that the Republican Party gives them a chance to vote on a resolution to support the Global War on Terror, the Dems in force start to scatter.

Democrats denounced the debate and vote as a politically motivated charade, and most, including Pelosi, voted against the measure. They said that supporting it would have the effect of affirming Bush’s “failed policy” in Iraq.

Balking carried a risk for Democrats, particularly when they see an opportunity to win back control of Congress from the GOP. Republicans likely will use Democratic “no” votes to claim that their opponents don’t support U.S. troops. (snip)

But as the death toll and price tag of the conflict continue to rise, opinion polls show voters increasingly frustrated with the war and favoring Democrats to control Congress instead of the Republicans who now run the show.

Sensitive to those political realities, Republicans in both the Senate and House sought to put lawmakers of both parties on record on an issue certain to be central in this fall’s congressional elections.

The Senate vote unfolded unexpectedly as the second-ranking GOP leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, introduced legislation he said was taken from a proposal by Sen. John Kerry, the Massachusetts Democrat and war critic. It called for Bush to agree with the Iraqi government on a schedule for withdrawal of combat troops by December 31, 2006.  (emphasis added by TRS)

Sneaky, sneaky, sneaky!  I love it.  In a nutshell, this is what the vote was all about: put up or shut up!  But when push came to shove, the Democrats couldn’t take the heat.  Many were scrambling for cover as fast as they could.  To the Democratic Party, what this whole issue is about is talking points to their base.  Their hard left loud fringe base likes to be mollified by leftist politicians.  Its like a school yard kid telling his friends how he is going to punch out another boy.  But when it gets down to crunch time, he is nowhere to be seen.  The Democratic Party does not want their votes counted on this issue.  They just like to talk. They know middle America supports the war and our troops.  By voting against the war, Democrats in red states would lose a lot of votes.

The House on Friday handily rejected a timetable for pulling U.S. forces out of Iraq, culminating a fiercely partisan debate between Republicans and Democrats feeling the public’s apprehension about war and the onrushing midterm campaign season.

In a 256-153 vote that mirrored the position taken by the Senate earlier, the GOP-led House approved a nonbinding resolution that praises U.S. troops, labels the Iraq war part of the larger global fight against terrorism and says an “arbitrary date for the withdrawal or redeployment” of troops is not in the national interest.

With 256 voting for the resolution, a lot of Democrats voted for it.  Probably the ones in red states.  When it comes to prinicipals or their jobs, these politicians rather have their jobs.  Cowards!

House Debats Resolution on the GWOT

Yesterday I discussed at length the House debating an amendment whether to require the US to pull troops from Iraq within a year.  Powerline has more news of a Republican backed resolution which honors our troops,  their sacrifice, and the importance of the Global War on Terror, including what the batty left has to say about the whole matter.  The resolution reads as follows:

Resolved, That the House of Representatives-

(1) honors all those Americans who have taken an active part in the Global War on Terror, whether as first responders protecting the homeland, as servicemembers overseas, as diplomats and intelligence officers, or in other roles;

(2) honors the sacrifices of the United States Armed Forces and of partners in the Coalition, and of the Iraqis and Afghans who fight alongside them, especially those who have fallen or been wounded in the struggle, and honors as well the sacrifices of their families and of others who risk their lives to help defend freedom;

(3) declares that it is not in the national security interest of the United States to set an arbitrary date for the withdrawal or redeployment of United States Armed Forces from Iraq;

(4) declares that the United States is committed to the completion of the mission to create a sovereign, free, secure, and united Iraq;

(5) congratulates Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki and the Iraqi people on the courage they have shown by participating, in increasing millions, in the elections of 2005 and on the formation of the first government under Iraq’s new constitution;

(6) calls upon the nations of the world to promote global peace and security by standing with the United States and other Coalition partners to support the efforts of the Iraqi and Afghan people to live in freedom; and

(7) declares that the United States will prevail in the Global War on Terror, the noble struggle to protect freedom from the terrorist adversary.

I can not figure out why Democrats would be against this resolution.  It says nothing about supporting President Bush.  It says nothing about the reasoning of the current administration being right about going into this war.  So why would the Democrats not want to support this resolution?

Except it honors Americans, which the Dems don’t support.  It honors the sacrifice made by Americans in the GWOT, except just like the previous one, the Dems don’t like honoring Americans.  Americans are bad people according to the likes of John Murtha.  The Democratic Party wants not only an arbitrary date to pull out our troops, they want our troops out now.  They can not support a democratic and free Iraq.  And lastly, the Democratic Party does not want us to prevail in the GWOT.

Maybe since the resolution says nothing about tucking tail and running, the Cut-and-run Party can not support it.  The Democrats need to wake up.  Americans on the whole do not like nay-sayers.  This is why they lost the 2004 election.  Americans want leadership, not people who just complain.  This resolution lists out positive steps in winning the GWOT.  Something the Democrats are obviously not willing to do.

Now lets see where the Representatives draw the line.  I will make a prediction.  I predict the resolution will pass overwhelmingly with most Democrats supporing it.  The resolution forces Democrats to go on record supporting or not supporting winning this war.  I will bet their jobs are more important than following their ‘principals.’
