CBS: Zarqawi Beaten

Has CBS learned nothing after the fake National Guard memo fiasco?  And now instead of going after the President, they have targeted those most responsible for our safety and those least able to respond to their charges.  The members of the task force responsible for Abu al-Zarqawi capture have spent months chasing down this evil terrorist.  After finally catching up with him, F-16 Falcons sent two 500 pound laser guided bombs into his ‘safe house.’  From published reports, the Iraqi police forces were the first to arrive at the scene followed by our own special forces.  And now we hear from ‘unsubstantiated witness’ that our soldiers beat a man already on the verge of death.  Sorry if I am a little skeptical of that report.

An Iraqi man who was one of the first people on the scene of the U.S. airstrike targeting Abu Musab al-Zarqawi said he saw American troops beating a man who had a beard like the al Qaeda leader.  (snip)

U.S. troops arriving on the scene wrapped the man’s head in an Arab robe and began beating him, said the local man, who refused to give his name or show his face to the camera. His account could not be independently verified.

The unidentified man who reported this incident did not wish to be photographed or in any way identified.  Does this in any way sound familiar?  Maybe like the Texas National Guard documents written by a man who is dead and can no longer repudiate them.  I did not think CBS could stoop to a new low after the incident with the Texas National Guard.  But here they are out in force, anxious for any story which would cast dispersions on our fighting men and women.  The people responsible for this story are truly sick.

Knowing the American people might not bite on this news, they include things to personalize the news.

From a helicopter hovering above the site, a wide swath of destruction could be seen. There were no remaining walls in the house, The debris included a skimpy slip in a leopard skin pattern and other see-through pieces of women’s clothing. In the crater itself were charred dresses, torn blankets, thin sponge mattresses and pillows.
Also scattered among the debris of concrete blocks was a pillow with a floral pattern, sandals and a bag. There was also a foam mattress, a cooler and part of a washing machine. Green pomegranates hung from a tree left standing nearby.

This attack piece on our soldiers might be more real if CBS would identify the witness who ‘saw’ what happened.  Personally, CBS has lost all credibility with me and with most of the American people if their poor ratings are any clue.  It time for the once respected news network to get on board with our troops, instead of constantly looking for another Mai Lai.

There are some like Fred in Ace in the Hole who insist what happened afterwards doesn’t matter.  “Personally, I don’t care if they cut his….. off.”  Well, you can imagine what he said.  Fred doesn’t think it matters because of all the evil this single man is responsible for.  While I don’t agree with him, I can certainly understand his feelings on the matter.  But I think it does matter whether or not our troops beat Zarqawi, for it cuts into the very character of our troops.  And for most of the troops I have met, character matters, a lot.

Left Fails to Explain Zawahiri Supporting Zarqawi

There have been serveral claims made by those of the left that Usama bin Ladden and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi did not get along and were in fact competitors instead of allies. So when our military killed he, all it did was to help bin Ladden.

Well you know when Zarqawi first met bin Laden in December 1999, according to an Israeli intelligence official with whom I spoke, it was “loathing at first sight.” Bin Laden found Zarqawi to be aggressive, abrasive. He distrusted him immediately…

David Corn of The Nation feels from what he has heard, Usama is happy about Zarqawi’s death.

My old buddy David Corn of the Nation was on Diane Rheim’s NPR radio show this morning trying to sell the chestnut that Osama bin Laden is pleased that Zarqawi is dead – because Zarqawi is more valuable to the movement as a martyr than as a terrorist commander.

Wouldn’t you know it, when the left begins their criticism of the US airstrike, out comes a video making shambles of all their arguments. So how do these nay-sayers have to say about the Ayman al-Zawahiri video in which the number 2 al-Qaeda leader praises Zarqawi.

“God bless the prophet of Islam in Iraq, the persistent hero of Islam, the Holy Warrior Abu Musab al-Zarqawi,” al-Zawahiri said.

This tape, since it did not mention Zarqawi’s death, was made before the terrorist leader died in a safe house in Iraq. But don’t expect facts to stop the left. There will always be those who detract from the good work our military is doing.

Scrappleface puts all of this in perspective, especially how the Democrats feel about the death of one of the most evil men in the War on Terrorism. (understand this is supposed to be humorous, you know, a parody)

As Blackberry devices and cell phones on Capitol Hill hummed with news of the death of terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi yesterday, Congressional Democrats vowed that despite the loss they would fight on in “the war on the war on terror.”

“Zarqawi will be missed because he put a human face on the futility of the illegal U.S. occupation of Iraq,” said one unnamed lawmaker, who assured a reporter that Democrats are still optimistic. We’re still looking for the silver lining.

Rep. John Murtha, D-PA, a former Marine and vocal critic of the military occupation of Iraq, immediately denounced “the Zarqawi massacre” and suggested that the F-16 pilot who dropped the bombs had snapped under pressure and murdered the al Qaeda leader “in cold blood”.

Sen. Arlen Specter, R-PA, demanded an explanation of the secret intelligence gathering techniques and surveillance used to find Mr. Zarqawi.

“I want to give the president an opportunity to explain the program to the Congress and to assure the American people that nobody’s civil rights were violated,” said Sen. Specter.
