Zarqawi IS Dead, Good News, but….

In spite of good news, there are those who are always looking for that splash of cold water.  In the case of the death of Zarqawi, CNN doesn’t look at the state of terrorism in Iraq for the cold water, but instead turns incredibly to what is going on in this country.

The death of a man who celebrated indiscriminate killing, and who claimed to have personally beheaded American captive Nicholas Berg, can certainly be seen as unalloyed good news. But if you look at the news of the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the most sought after terrorist in Iraq, through the prism of domestic politics, here’s a cautionary note.

For some of these news organizations, they tell of good news, and then comes the cautionary little ‘but.’  This is all good news, but…

Jeff Greenfield lists many of the good things that happened in Iraq since the fall of Saddam Hussein, and then the but…

Today, approval of the president’s Iraq policy is at 34 percent. The key to whether those numbers get better may well lie in the answer to one question: Will the death of al-Zarqawi lessen the level of violence against Americans and against Iraqis of different religious beliefs?

What does the war’s approval ratings in this country have to do with what is happening in Iraq.  Perhaps if Greenfield wanted to prejudice his reading audience, this would be a good way to do it.

Come on Jeff, this is good news.  Admit it, without the ‘but.’

Duke Rape Case Begins to Fall Apart, Part 2

The Duke rape case is becoming even more bizarre.  This stripper came to the party of the Duke Lacrosse team and had to be carried to her car.  Later she accused three members of the team of taking her to the bathroom and raping her.  But then we learn that the woman changed her story several times as noted here.  And now, this.  It is beginning to look really bad for the Prosecutor.

Police investigating the Duke University lacrosse team on rape allegations “omitted” notes from a second dancer at the party, who told authorities the alleged victim had been drinking, was acting “crazy” and that her colleague’s accusation was a “crock,” a defense attorney said Thursday. (snip)

“Precious [the accuser] became ‘crazy’ and eventually passed out and had to be carried to Pittman’s car by some of the Duke athletes,” the statement says.

The Duke rape case is falling apart before our eyes.  And its looking more and more like the Durham, North Carolina prosecutor was using this case for re-election purposes.  It is incredible someone would purposefully destroy the lives of some young men purely for political reasons.  If it turns out the DA knew this woman was lying before he brought changes against the players, he should be disbarred.

Today’s Liberal in WWII

This is good.  Eleven things today’s liberal might have said had they been around during WWII.  It’s hilarious.

Good Riddance To Bad Rubbish

Whoop! Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is D-E-A-D, dead and the world is better off without him. Chalk another one up for our military and our intelligence services. Fox News has been all over this story.

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Al Qaeda in Iraq leader who led a brutal insurgency that included homicide bombings, kidnappings and beheadings, was killed in an airstrike on a building north of Baghdad, U.S. and Iraqi officials announced Thursday. (snip)

U.S. President George W. Bush said al-Zarqawi’s death “is a severe blow to Al Qaeda and it is a significant victory in the war on terror.”

Zarqawi was an evil, evil man whose actions and leadership killed thousands of people. I really doubt few in the world will grieve much over the death of al-Queda’s number one leader in Iraq. Apparently the US military dropped two 500 pound bombs on a meeting of Zarqawi and seven of his lieutenants. While his death may not lead to peace, it does give the people of Iraq the opportunity to begin to take control of their own country. This strike will eventually lead to peace. Anytime a known terrorist of Zarqawi’s stature is taken out, it is a good day.

Real Clear Politics has what I consider the best quote of the day so far.

Some people deserve to rest in peace (R.I.P.), others deserve to rot in Hell (R.I.H.). Abu Musab al-Zarqawi certainly falls into the latter category, and the world is much better off now that he’s been “eliminated”.

Update:

I have been watching Fox News this morning on the death of Zarqawi.  There have been a couple of press conferences, one from Centcom and one from Secretary Rumsfeld at a NATO conference.  While most of the questions from reporters were relevant, there were a couple of questions which show how the MSM is going to spin this great news.  One reporter asked a Centcom general to give a report which would quell those conspiracy theorists (she did not call them conspiracy theorists, but I certainly will) who believe we waited to move on Zarqawi until it could coincide with the news of the completing of the Iraqi cabinet.  And during the Rumsfeld conference one reporter called the killing of Zarqawi, “symbolic.”

These people are nuts.  While the death of the terrorist mastermind in Iraq may not end the violence there, it is a major blow to al-Queda.  But I do not expect the what Rush Limbaugh calls ‘the drive by media’ to report it as such.
