This is almost too unreal. James H. Webb, a former Secretary of the Navy under Ronald Reagan, is running for the Senate seat of Virginia, is seeking to replace George Allen. Webb has all the credentials, Vietnam War veteran, highly decorated, supported Allen six years ago, and supported President Bush in 2000. Sounds alright so far, right? I mean, everyone can expect a challenger every once in a while. But there is a problem, Webb is running as a Democrat—a Democrat! Look at his explanation why.
“When I look at where this administration has taken its own party, I cannot help but think about the pendulum of history,” Webb said.
“The pendulum has swung, I think, as far as it can swing given the principles this party had once espoused.”
Webb says Allen is part of an arrogant Republican majority in Washington bent on repeating in Iraq the blunders that killed so many of his buddies in Vietnam a generation ago.
He accuses President Bush, whom he backed in 2000, of betraying conservative fiscal governance by pushing the federal debt toward $9 trillion. He claims the GOP, his former party, and Allen in particular are Bush’s eager accomplices.
If Webb wants less spending and a smaller government, he chose the wrong party. While President Bush has engaged in deficit spending, it is worthwhile to note that we are at war and wars take money. We have always run a deficit in wartime. The tax-and-spend Democrats like spending our money. After all, its not theirs.
If Webb thinks Iraq is another Vietnam, which it isn’t, he chose the right party. He chose the party of Nancy Pelosi, Dick Durban, John Murtha, Harry Reid, and Ted Kennedy; the cut-and-run Democrats. This is the group Webb has joined. All are hoping for a loss in Iraq, all are hoping for another quagmire.
It makes you wonder if Webb really believes all this crap, or if he just wants to win his first election.
