Impeach President Bush?

I personally like President Bush.  In fact I voted for him when he was running for the governorship of Texas and for president twice.  I have no beef with George Bush on the war on terror, or the warrantless wiretapping, or holding terrorists indefinitely at Club Gitmo.  But I do have a problem with his spending and I REALLY have a problem with his failure to protect our borders.  Make no mistake about it; we are being invaded by another country with the expressed purpose of taking back what the Mexican government views as rightfully theirs’.  We have in this country upwards of 12 or so million illegal immigrants who have no with to learn the language, who thinks they have the rights of all Americans including the right to vote, who take time off from work and school to protest a law which would protect our borders.  And now President Bush wants to reward these illegals with citizenship.  Too many people have waited too long to immigrate legally into this country than to just let others jump ahead just because they are already here.

I have been posting on the illegal immigration for some time.  Recent posts can be found here, here, here, and here.  Illegal immigration is a huge problem.  We are being invaded by a foreign country and yet, only the Minutemen seem willing to do anything about it.  Mexico is openly sending these illegals across the border and telling them how to make it across safely.  And now comes word that the Border Patrol has informed Mexican authorities where the Minutemen are located.

Chris Simcox, President of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, issued the following statement:

“The initial reports [of the US Border Patrol informing Mexican authorities of the location of the Minutemen] appear to be the tip of the iceberg. The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps has been warning people that our government has no intention of taking the necessary steps to secure our borders. It now appears that the U.S. government has proactively taken steps to ensure that the open border status quo is maintained. Even if we take the latest statement from the Border Patrol denying involvement as truth, at best the report on the Mexican consulate website exposes widespread espionage, and systematic spying against free and law-abiding American citizens, on the part of the Mexican government – with or without U.S. government assistance.”

How long will the American people put up with this unsatisfactory government response before they do something about it?  All of which brings me to LaShawn Barber.  She has an excellent post asking if what the President is doing constitutes high crimes and misdemeanors since he refuses to protect the American people against this unwarranted invasion.

I believe George Bush’s failure to enforce immigration law and stop the foreign invasion, which he has the power and authority to do, warrants impeachment. Because of Bush, illegal invaders are emboldened, demanding that which they have no legal right to obtain.

I am doubtful whether this rises to the level of impeachment, but if President Bush does not get his act together soon, then conservatives may stay home come November 2006 and 2008.  It is unbelievable that the President would actually refuse to take action to protect the American people from invasion.  Since we are being invaded by Mexico, perhaps we should give the President a more fitting name.  Maybe something like “La mujer bionic,” the Bionic Woman.  The President has all that power, but regrettably, no balls.

Winners and Losers in Texas Tax Hike

The Texas Legislature went into the latest special session under a court deadline to fix the school finance system.  Property taxes across the state have reached the state maximum triggering the court ruling that this constituted a statewide property tax which is not constitutional under the Texas Constitution.  And so with great fanfare the legislature met to attempt to fix the school finance system and by default, the Texas tax system.  Some of the initial plans included buying down property taxes with the eight billion dollar surplus in state coffers.  But wouldn’t you know, once the legislature met, they would want to raise taxes.  The state senate is poised to vote on the new package today.  While there may be some last minute changes, here is how the Dallas Morning News lists some of the winners and losers are being affected.

Winners include:

TEACHERS
Would get an across-the-board raise, though some teachers say that’s not enough.
HOMEOWNERS
Would get up to a one-third cut in school property taxes.
CAPITAL-INTENSIVE BUSINESSES
If they’re currently paying, oil and gas companies, utilities, and some manufacturers would get a cut.
OTHER BUSINESSES
Those that own a lot of property will save.

Losers include:

SMOKERS
They’ll pay $1 more a pack.
RENTERS
Unless landlords pass along the cuts, they’ll see no benefit.
SMALL BUSINESSES WITH NO PROPERTY
Those that lease but are big enough to pay the business tax will pay more.
USED-CAR BUYERS
They won’t be able to fudge on what they paid for the vehicle to save a few bucks.
PROFESSIONALS
Many doctors and lawyers will pay state business taxes for the first time.

For me this is a big win since I own both a house and a property intensive business, but at no time do I like the idea of raising taxes.  While the Texas Legislature is control by Republicans, sometimes they act just like Democrats.  How can they march into another special session for the purpose of bringing the state’s school finance plan into compliance with a court mandate and end up with a tax increase instead?  Republicans merely caved in to the demands of the Democrats who never saw a tax increase they didn’t like.  I would not be surprised to see some turnover in the legislature come election day.
