An Undocumented Rodent

Calling all Gringos.  You have got to read this post from Lone Star Times.  It is really good and real funny.  And it gives new meaning to the Fastest Rodent in the West who I guess can now be called an Undocumented Rodent.

Texas Democrats Are Big Spenders

We all know that the Democratic politicians in Washington like to spend money, but I would have thought that local politicians, especially in the very conservative state of Texas, would be a little bit more circumspect in their voicing their ideas on spending. I have chronicled here about Texas’ school spending woes since a judge has ruled the Texas school finance system unconstitutional. The state legislature has tried to solve this problem multiple times with no success, particularly with the Democratic holdouts. The Judge gave Texas until June 1 to come up with an alternative.  So far many plans have come and gone and the state still does not have a plan.  But now the Democratic Party has shed any semblance of holding down spending. These are quotes from an article from ABC News 13 KTRK out of Houston, Texas.

Democrats argued that more of the money should go to education improvement initiatives and that dedicating money to property tax relief now would hinder their ability to deal with future needs.

Democratic Sen. John Whitmire of Houston argued that property tax relief should not come before other state needs, such as highways, colleges and health care costs.

“Why are you continuing to say we’re here to reduce property taxes? It’s not true. That is just a political statement,” Whitmire said, while debating the measure with Williams. He pointed to the ruling of the Texas Supreme Court, which did not call for property tax cuts.

Don’t these politicians know? This is Texas! While this state was in Democratic hands for many years, it never lost its conservative values. The fact that Texas had a Democratic governor for 100 years was more a reflection of the Civil War than having liberal values. There was a time when only a Democrat could win in this state. By and large, the Democratic candidate who was the most conservative usually won.

Today, most of the South, including Texas, has thrown off the vestiges of the Civil War. Yet through all of these years, Texas politicians have been very conservative on spending. That is, until now.  Today, it is almost impossible to tell the rhetoric of a Texas Democrat for that of a Massachusetts liberal.  And that, to me, is scary.

It seems more and more often, the Democrats at the local level are espousing the same tune as Democrats at the national level. They all want more money to spend. Their tune never changes and it is always the same. This time they are catering to their Democratic stalwarts, the National Education Association, another words, teachers. Unless the Democrats change their tune, they will remain the minority party in Texas for the foreseeable future. Which, as a land owner and a taxpayer, is quite okay with me.
