Border Security and the MSM
Illegal immigration is no joke. So why do members of the media treat it as one? Most of the American people feel our borders are too porous allowing millions to cross into this country each year. It is estimated a twelve million illegal immigrants now reside in the United States. The immigration problem has gotten so out of hand; three states have declared states of emergency in order to receive federal funds. I have discussed this very issue in earlier threads here and here. Frustrated with the government’s help, some people have taken matters into their own hands and have volunteered to help man the border assisting the already stretched too thin border patrol by radioing in illegal crossings. US New and World Report’s Angie C. Marek had a different take on the Minutemen.
Frustration on the right has fueled the rapid growth of the Minutemen, vigilantes who want to help close America’s porous borders.
Vigilantes!? Volunteers are armed only with radios are called vigilantes just because they do not have a badge. The border security problem is no joke. Any attempts by Congress to deal with this issue are met with derision in the liberal MSM. Ms. Marek goes on to lists some of the proposals making their way through Congress along with detractors.
Expect some gonzo antics on the floor. Already on the agenda: tough proposals to fence off the whole Southwest border and deny citizenship to babies born to illegal immigrants and a liberal amendment to grant in-state tuition to college students who aren’t U.S. citizens. Republicans will be skittishly eyeing religious leaders who have been critical of the House bill. In a recent editorial, Roman Catholic Cardinal Roger Mahony, head of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, wrote that “Christ instructs us to clothe the naked, feed the poor, and welcome the stranger.” But in an election year, it’s clear that not everyone in the Senate agrees.
Protecting our border is no joke. There are proposals to build a fence along the entire border. I doubt this will ever take place given its prohibitive costs. Building a fence in high cross areas is more viable. Denying citizenship to babies born to illegal immigrants is an acceptable option. The prospect of having babies who become American citizens upon birth in the United States is a great draw to these illegals. The granting of in-state tuition to college students not born in the U.S. is already being done on college campuses. This smacks of discrimination since it is not available to American citizens from other states. And btw, I have no problem doing as Christ instructs. But I do have a problem rewarding those who flaunt our laws and stretch our social services to the breaking point.
