Will the Real Arlen Specter Please Stand Up
What is one of the most important responsibilities of the President? Isn’t it protecting the American people? So far President Bush has done a great job. Ever since we were attacked on 9/11, our President has been on the offensive. He took on the al-Qaeda terrorist group responsible for attacking us. He took on the Taliban in Afghanistan who was protecting Usama Bin Ladin. Then our President took on Saddam Hussein. This man had and used WMDs against Iran and his own people. He also supported terrorists around the world. President Bush is also going after al-Qaeda around the world. And he is using every tool at his disposal to carry out the task of protecting us. So why are some in Congress determined to undermine the President’s ability to protect us?
For some it is simple. The Democrats are against President Bush and his warrentless wiretapping for purely political reasons. They are sacrificing our long term security in order to win short term political gains. As I said, the self promotion of the Democrats at the expense of the country I understand. I don’t agree with it, but I understand it. It is what the they do.
But why is Arlen Specter criticizing the President’s authority to monitor international calls when he knows the wire tapping is protecting the American people from terrorist attacks? According the USA Today Specter said:
“They want to do just as they please, for as long as they can get away with it,” Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said in an interview with The Associated Press. “I think what is going on now without congressional intervention or judicial intervention is just plain wrong.”
Talk about a man who plays to the cameras. The evil American President just wants more power at the expense of Congress. Come on Arlen. You know what is really going on here. Its about protecting the American people. But Specter has a solution. To remedy the problem as he sees it, Specter has authored a bill giving oversight to an intelligence court to oversee the wiretapping. I am not sure why the senator is doing this other than to curry favor with his liberal friends. Maybe he just wants more accolades. Well, Senator, you have to earn them.
My views of Senator Specter have gone through a roller-coaster ride lately. Before he took over the Chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee, I was very concerned about him. During the hearings of both Judge Roberts and Alito, I was very pleased with the Senator. Now with the warrentless wiretapping, I am disappointed in him again. I keep waiting for the real Arlen Specter to show up and am disappointed with what appears.
